Current situation
|
After giving a heavy boost to the Basque language - at the end of the XIX century and all through the XX century, with a pause caused by the Spanish Civil War in 1936 - the Basque language reached its zenith when a standard variety, known as "Euskara Batua", was established. This mixed variety also became standardised among Basque speakers. The so-called variety transcended the usage limits: education, administration and media. In addition, different registers of the language have been set among Basque speakers. Furthermore, a process of basquization happened among the habitants of the Basque Country, in a greater or lesser degree and, even in those areas where the presence Basque language had already been dismissed. As a consequence, it is difficult to define the current dialectal situation due to the tremendous changes in territories and idiolects. |
