Description

The collection of the manuscripts that are compiled in Bonaparte's Archive is the most complete -if not only- collection of Basque dialectology that exists. Every dialect, sub-dialect and even varieties of the Basque language are reflected in these manuscripts which, whether short or long, are always representative. Thus, in order to study the history and dialects of the Basque language in depth the aims of Bonaparte's Archive is basically twofold:
- Diachronic features of the texts, belonging to the XVII and XIX centuries.
- Its value, as some texts reflect the only evidence of some varieties that have already disappeared.
There is no doubt that without this Archive, information about Basque dialectology would have been limited. Finally, the digitalised version of the Bonaparte Corpus, to which the standard codification of TEI has been applied, makes the corpus even more interesting for knowledge and referencing purposes. |
